This was given to a student to help with better thumb placement to improve stretches while playing a whole-step, whole-step pattern. This drill moves further down the fretboard which gradually increases the difficulty by making the stretch bigger and bigger. Having your thumb placed behind the guitar neck, keeping it fairly straight, and just behind where your 2nd and 3rd finger would be is how to position your thumb to make the stretch easier to achieve.
